Brief:
As part of a small housing development for Gusto Construction, we were asked to convert this disused chapel into a single bedroom dwelling that would be economical to build and be saleable in a difficult market.
Solution:
We were able to persuade them that the way forward was to restore the exterior of the building to retain the streetscape, but to do a radical strip out of the internal partitions and provide a 2 storey single space dwelling by creating a series of areas by the placing of two simple elements, a mezzanine floor and a vertical utility pod within the main volume.
This ensured that all the spaces provided would be light, airy and uplifting, and also kept the construction costs low.
